Selmaville students are setting their sights high this school year with a brand-new Reading Challenge designed to build excitement, foster teamwork, and strengthen a love of reading. Thanks to the creativity and dedication of Ms. Marissa, the Reading Challenge bulletin board is now complete and serves as a colorful hub where students can watch their progress come to life.

The Reading Challenge gives students the chance to meet both individual and group goals through Accelerated Reader (AR). Each child has their own reading target, but the program goes beyond that by adding class competitions and a whole-school challenge.

Class vs. Class Competition
During the first quarter, students will compete in a class vs. class challenge. The prize? A water balloon showdown! The winning class in each division will get the opportunity to toss water balloons at a staff member. Even more exciting—students will get to vote from a list of participating staff members to decide who will take the splash. This lighthearted challenge is designed to keep students motivated and working together.

School-Wide Goal
Beyond the classroom competition, all Rockets are teaming up for one big school-wide goal: earning 6,000 AR points before the end of the year. If students reach this ambitious target, they’ll be rewarded with a special AR Day Celebration filled with fun activities to honor their achievement.

Encouraging Reading at Home
Parents play an important role in supporting these challenges. By encouraging daily reading at home, asking children about their AR goals, and celebrating small milestones, families can help build excitement that carries over into the classroom.

With every page turned, Rockets are blasting closer to their goals. The Reading Challenge is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of literacy, teamwork, and perseverance.

A Note from the Superintendent
We are so proud of the enthusiasm our students are showing as they launch into this challenge. Reading is one of the most important skills our children will develop, and it opens doors to every subject and opportunity. Thank you for encouraging reading at home and supporting your child’s growth as a learner. Together, we’ll make this year’s Reading Challenge a success.

Keep reading, Rockets—the countdown to celebration is on!
